If you cannot use alum pullies and must use
stock steal pullies... Get some pullies off
of an early corvette, something like a 1967
vet. They where deep groove. You can get
a deep two groove crank pully, a deep single groove water pully, and a deep two groove ps pully. I then used a deep single groove steal alt pully i picked up at local alternator shop, when i use to run an alt.

i have an old set i bought from
Steve's Camaros
San Bruno, CA
650 873 1890

next, take long staright edge, and lay it across the face of the pullies, as the belts travel. make sure pullies line up and there are no gaps. that is the biggest problem with throwing belts, make sure things are straight.
ask for Steve.

What does everyone think about serpentines?
My old motor ('94 305) had them and when that blew, I transfered the pulleys to my new motor. I've revved 5800 and it's never come off. I've got the A/C and air pump removed, then just measured how long of a belt I would need and picked one up for it at NAPA. Any thoughts? Is this a problem waiting to happen?

I run a serpentine setup from Jones racing and one of their PS pumps. While pricey (around $500 w/pump) it's been great. It's a 5 rib serpentine for WP, PS and crank in pretty much any ratio you need. The only issue I've ever had was when it rolled a belt 'cause we accidently misaligned it. The pulleys have 6 grooves to give some extra leeway for alignment. Welps... we missed.

Meanwhile, everytime my partner's lost a belt with v grooves, it's taken both belts out. He'd thought once it was 'just the PS' and wound up torching the motor. At least with the serpentine, you KNOW it's all gone when the PS goes away.

we run a highly competitive street stock and have no belt problems using v belts. our experience with our competitors is they always pull them too tight. our pulleys are even out of alignment a touch, specially that saginaw ps pump. but we have always run underdrive crank pulley.

the belts should move not more than the are wide so if they are 1/4 in wide they souldnt move more than a 1/4 inch up and down
