I race the bomber class where the cars are supposed to bo all stock, but i know for a fact that not everyone is.my rule is cheating aint cheating unless you get caught. my question is what is the largest cam i could put in my chevy 350 without geting to much of a rough idle so that no one could really tell that i have a cam.

The duration of a cam is what makes it idle rough.

So pick a cam with the most lift for duration around 210 @ 50. & you should still have a smooth idle.

I had one that was 218 @ 50 & it had a mildly rough idle.....

What does it say in your rules on cam lift?

The old 350 horse 327 cam has .224 duration and a wide 114 lobe center. It's very affordable and will idle well. You can buy a vacuum rule cam that will do the same with more power but it will be more expensive.

WE USE A SUMMIT .488 LIFT CAM W/232 DUR INTAKE AND EXHAUST. PULLS HARD BETWEEN 4000 AND 6500 RPM, BUT THAT'S WITH OUR ENGINE COMBO. I.VE SEEN ALOT OF GUYS ACTUALLY HURT PERFORMANCE WITH THE WRONG CAM, CAMS DO NOT WIN RACES. BEST BET CHECK WITH A RACE ENGINE BUILDER,OR POST ALL YOUR ENGINE SPECS ON HERE, MOST OF THESE GUYS KNOW THEIR STUFF.

Ok here it is. I got a 95 chevy 350 motor, stock bottom half, camel back heads with 1.94 valves,an aluminum GM hi performance corvette intake,an edelbrock 600 carb, stock exhaust manifolds,3inch exhaust with flowmaster single chamber mufflers which are right in front of the trans, and 4.11 gear out back. what cam would work best,as long as it doesnt have a rough idle.

Can you run bleed off lifters I guess not but if your wanting to cheat that would be the way to go I built a buddy an engine where they had a 14in vacuum rule at a 1000 I put a 530 lift 234 @ 050 with a 112 lobe center and with the right valve lash we could get 15 out of it and it runs very well in other words we put the competition to work for a few weeks till they figured out how to do it and still be legal under there new rules.....Towman

ISKY MAKES GREAT CICLE TRACK CAMS ANYWHERE MILD TO WILD, SOUNDS LIKE YOUR ENGINE WILL BREATH SO GO WILD, CALL SUMMIT TECH LINE TO KNOW FOR SURE. IF YOU WANT TO GET RID OF LOPE RUN VARIABLE DURATION LIFTERS, BUT STAY AWAY FROM ROADES IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GET CAUGHT(THEY ARE REALLY NOISY) TRY CRANE CAMS HI INTESITY LIFTERS, $109 IN SUMMIT. OH AND JUST FROM EXPERIENCE, TRY NOT TO TURN THAT FUELIE BLOCK OVER 6500 RPM, AS THE MAIN WEBS WILL FLEX AND CRACK, AND YOU'LL BE PICKING YOUR BOTTOM END UP OFF THE GROUND.
