Here is what we are up to, we are changing from a th-350 to a powerglide. In the th-350 we ran 2nd gear and 411's for 62-6300 rpms. Switching to the powerglide, will we need to go with 342's or 373's to keep at least that many rpms or take it as high as 65-6600 rpms. Much debating going on and we want to get it right the first time. And while you all are here.... is there any way to run stock ignition 6500 or higher without if cutting out or fluttering? Thanks in advance John

Your final drive ratio was a 6.25 with the TH350 and 4.10 gear rear combo. A TH350 has a second gear ratio of 1.52. Generally powerglides have either a 1.76 or 1.82 first gear ratio so you might want to determine which one you have because it can make a little difference. A 1.76 powerglide combined with a 3.73 rear will give you a final drive of 6.56, which is a little more than you had before. A 1.82 glide with a 3.73 will give you a 6.79 final drive which is quite a bit more than you had. A 1.76 glide with a 3.42 rear will give you a 6.02 final drive which is less than you had before. A 1.82 glide with a 3.42 will give you a 6.22 final drive which is almost exactly what you had before. I figured I'd post them all to help you make a decision. The 1.76 powerglide has a heavier duty planetary gear assembly than the 1.82 and a different length input shaft. If you have any questions about identifying the transmission just post another message and I'll be happy to help.

3.55 gear 1.76 glide is 6.24,i'm not sure which will be easier to find,a 1.82 glide or a 3.55 gear.

As far as the ignition goes, get ahold of an ACCELL modulator or a mod from Davis unified ignition. The better than stock modulator will help your ignition run above 4500 rpm without cutting out.

Thanks guys. With the ignition, the problem is we get teched for it. It has to be stock. Ours is just starting to flutter at 6200 rpms. So I guess the question is HOW do you get around "stock" when you get teched for it?

Get an Accel, Holley or Petronix performance module. The performance modules look just like stock if you pull the stickers off. The race modules look different, Accel's is a green circuit board versus standard black plastic, and you may get DQ'd for it. Get a new coil too. That should work to around 7000 rpm.

I ran 3:73 gears with a 1:76 glide on a high blanked and semi blanked 1/3 mile dirt tracks, and that's the ticket!

My car at the time was a heavy 75 Monte with a 355 small block running a Q jet. As for my stock appearing ingition,I bought a complete unit from a company called SDS in Sullivan Wisconsin. Some people just bypass a HEI as a good unit as stock, and it is to a point,by upgrading is only an additional benifit to peak performance and results.

You will find that the Powerglide and gear combo of 373's does change the way you do come out of the corner.....makes nice corner speed.

if you got a 9" you can get a 6.20 or a 6.33 for $110 at quick performance. than run your glide in drive.

ok here is the results of what we did. We put in the 3.73 gears this resulted in 6700 rpm's but the car lacked speed. So we have now put in the 3.42's will race tomorrow night so hope that does the trick. We also moved the ground from the roll bar to the motor and the stock ignition held up to the 6700 rpm's with no problem at all.

If your turning 6700 and lacking speed your also lacking HORSEPOWER the 3.42 may help you a little but sounds to me like you need somemore motor.....JMO.....Towman
