The car we got is an 84 Monte SS. It's in pretty good shape, not much rust at all, just a lil' in the trunk in a few spots, otherwise wonderful! the only damage is the right front side and the grill area a lil, but it's not much at all. It's almost too nice to build into a racer, but we finally found a car to use and we're goin with it. Planning on going all out with it and making it as legal beagle as possible for all the area tracks. It's going to be a very good learning experience and I'm looking forward to the challenge. Now just gotta strip her out, decide on an engine, try get the roll cage laid out, and such.

Making a real true to the frame all out roll cage is going to be interesting. I'm gonna be looking for some type of pattern to follow, is there anything available of the such?

Here's a few pics. of the car at the moment. I'm sure I'll be pickin all yer brains a lot here the rest of the summer! Happy Racing! Scott

Scott where are you located?

I have a 84 monte luxury that has been parked for a while.

I would trade you for the ss.

For the cage, I suggest Red Line (www.rlms.com). They make a pre-bent, pre-notched "mid-size" cage kit to fit the '78-up Monte. Ours worked like a jigsaw puzzle.

Here's ours:

Just finished a little over a month ago (wasn't an SS in its previous life ... BUT IT IS NOW! )

Nice car, hope you got a good price for it,it wont look that good for long.Welding and cutting on it will bubble the paint and put black burn spots all over it.As far as roll cage plans I suggest you use the IMCA specs for cage installation, there for you can make it an IMCA car and run for big money all over the country you can even get more for it when ready to sell.

man you should really think about not using that car.. if that is a real ss you should fix it up and sell it to finance your race project, do you want to sell it? the front end damage is minimal, those are sweet lil cars... my advice is to find another monte and use the slightly messed up nose piece on your race car and the fender can be removed and straightend out and it would be good enough for a race car..

I know it's a pretty nice car, but we've had such a time finding a good solid car anywhere near here for a reasonable price that we jumped on thi when we had the chance. It's not quite the gem them pics. show, the interior is kinda ripped apart and there's a few rust spots in the trunk, and one on the front tab of the passenger door.

I checked out rlms for the roll cage there, doens't look like a bad deal. I'll have to do some pricing of metal and see what I'm gonna do. As far as the IMCA specs, so I need to get the official rulebook to get the cage specs. for that? I saw you could order the rulebook through the website. I was planning on mainly making the car WISSOTA legal, so I gotta a lots of research to do here in the near future.

Bryanb- We momentarily considered fixing it up a lil' to make some money, but we've got so many other cars we're working on that there's no spare time as it is. We want to have this racer ready to go by Mid-August for a race. "do I want to sell it?".....I'm open to possibilities I guess if the situation is right.

Thanks for the input guys. Happy racing! Scott

Looks like a great chassis to use! You might even get lucky and find 28 spline axles in that brute. If your looking for a do it yourself kit, the only kit I have seen that seems up to date is the CSC (i think) IMCA cage kit. It is an offset design. Good luck with your New Car!

I've never seen a ss under three thousand even in that condition, the only metric worth more is a GN/GNX,I'd sell it on ebay and buy some parts to go fast then find an old beater to build. My malibu was 150.00 and the guy thought it had a 305 but someone put in a 1970 350 so i sold that and now the car is free.

Sell it on EBAY,or you could find an old chevy pickup without a motor and put it in there for a cheap hauler.

Howdy Rick.....yeah, the ol' 007 wasn't there cause I got too busy trying to get my brother ready to go in his car and my brakes were stickin' on my car and woudl've prolly locked up after a couple laps, so it wasn't worht the money. We're gonna mill down the pads here before fair time and use the newport for Figure 8. I wanna make the new car proctor and superior legal, don't know how much I"ll get to run there though. we'll be lucky to get that car done for fair time this year.....if we don't sell it....who knows. At SFD's my lil' brother ran our old celebrity in teh compacts. he was 008....mostly white car. He got 2nd in the very first heat and blew a tire in the feature. He did great though for his first time on the track and the car ran and worked good. Can't wait till fair time to see how he fares when we're more organized and maybe have it set up a lil' better. Which car #'s were you guys? It was nice to see a good turnout of cars there, maybe next year they'll advertise a bit more so there will be both more drivers and crowd. Just got the letter in the mail today for the meeting next week regarding rules and regs for the fair, I plan on attending it, but will likely be about 15 mins. late cause of work. Well let me know how ya'll did, and have a good one. Happy racing. Scott

Hey trapper! I was the #8k Budweiser down there, its painted just like Earnhardt Jr.'s car, and my car got the best looking car it was the 13k car. I did good for my first time considering the track was in pretty **** poor shape. I think they watered about 20 times before everything got started! But anyway, I was 4th in my heat, and I was going around corner 2 and I broke where it hooks on to where your driveshaft is. It was pretty rusted out to start with so I got that repaired already. My dad finished 4th in his heat, and his car was running really hot, it was at like 280 and one was lifters were bad and it was knocking when he was driving out to the consolation. But all in all, I really had a blast for the first time racing. I havent really talked to my dad at all about if we got anything in the mail about the fairs meeting. Where is it, and what time is? Talk to ya later.
