Nothing in the vin number will help you on the gears for the older cars. Besides the 8th digit is the engine code.
as for 2.41s look in 78-80 impallas.

All of your Buick Regal pre 86 7.5 have 2.41 gear ratio. But i'm not sure they will work, because of the carrier. But i do know,if your going to run dirt with that rear end,you don't want a 2.41. To high of a gear. The higher the # the Lower the gear. You'll want a 4.10 or a 4.56 gear, and that's just starting to get you to where you want to be.Just went through all of that myself, trying to get mine to work. But i had a 7.5 10 Bolt.So with a 8.5 you could probly go lower than a 4.56 ring an pinion. You'll want to make sure your Carrier will carry your gear also.Jeg's has the best price i could find. But to make that 7.5 to work would of cost me over 700.00,with Ring and Pinion, Carrier, and the posi traction sleave,or what ever its called. So O8 i went to a Ford 9". Got one that bolted right up to my Regal, for 300.00. Hope this helps.3e

I agree that 2.41 is high but i'm not shooting for a total gear, they don't make a 6.00 gear in a 10 bolt,so i have no choice,17j is right on i'm going to use a 350 turbo.I found a gear on e-bay for 35.00 including shipping,if anyone can beat that they better speak up.

I ran an 8.5, gears and parts are getting hard to come by.
Not ALL impalas are 7.5, some are 8.5.
The ones you find that are 8.5 you need to check axle length and spline. I'm not saying I know all about theses rearends, just some trouble I ran into last summer.
Also not to make a (plug) advertisement for them but at National Drivetrain you can get new ring and pinions for 8.5 for 125.00, save some cash!
