Police caprice came with a 8.5 that is different than the earlier ones, same as late model pickup I think.

I have a 96 caprice police with the 8.5 in it. The GM dealership said that the gear from any 8.5 in the trucks and early cars would work. The only difference is that the later ones have a sensor which can be removed and the hole plugged. I verified this where I worked at a Parts store. The bearing kit, installation kit and gear part numbers are the same for all years

and the ring is 1 gm 3988517 11 41 4 79
i take it that it's out of a 79 something right?

Another tid bit. the 4 1979 is the manufactor date. Which means it was probably in an 80 model by the time it makes it to the factory floor. The 3988516 and 3988517 are the part numbers. And the 11 and 41 should be the number of teeth on the gear. 3 on the pinion and 1 on the ring I'm not sure of
