It might just need to be adjusted, but I doubt it. I bet you will need to get some new parts.

My Cutlass did the same thing and I had a bad Carrier.

The splines in the yolk are softer than the pinion...Bearing wear can also cause this play..As far as the noise,I have seen axel studs wear the holes in the drums allowing a little slop...I know tight lugnuts should keep this from happening...But I have seen it..

Pickel is right...
If you just tighten the nut...You will pull the pinion foward in the housing and mess up the relation of the pinion to the ring...

i had that problem too with my pick up, i had a bad hanger along with u-joint
