I'm thinking about putting a roof escape hatch on my mod to double as an maintainence access hatch. Thoughts on putting a panio hinge down the center, front to rear, with a latch mechanism on the roof on the driver's side?

This seems better than constructing a nascar style driver's hatch.

I asked a few local tracks around these part's about the same thing and they all said they wouldn't allow it for the fear of something else coming off a car. I guess they would rather you burn up in a fire than pick up something on the track.

its one of the advantages of running a fiberglass roof, if you need too you can kick, punch your way out of the top

Out track was going to require them this year, they were basing it on a wreck where the driver could not get out of a late model. The Problem was the car was upside down so a roof hatch would have done NO GOOD! It was a big joke and once they realized it would have done no good they changed the rules and did not require them.

I've had them in our cars since Marc got trapped up against the wall, drivers side "in" in 1996. The first one I made was as you describe but we had problems keep it closed at speed. The "funny car style" one works better.

i like the accessability a hinge down the center will provide. I plan on putting two tipit style self latching latches, almost like a door latch, on the driver's side. Both connected to a release cable attached to a lever.

when you tried the hinge down the center, what type latching mechinism did you use?

I used the torsion clips most people call panel clips. One at the front and one at the rear of the hatch.
In the car pictured, it has a forward piano hinge and 2 panel clips in the rear. Marc gets in and out of this car thru the hatch.

ok here is an idea I had bouncing around in the back of my mind for awhile and never have seen it or got to do myself. Would be kinda of on the same deal as the hatch thing but I wanted to make a good portion of the top out of lexon it would be like a sun roof think it would be way cool with the lights shining though it. What do ya think? If any one does this post a pic.
