Whats the best way to identify one versus the other?

I think one has a smooth side rail and the other doesnt, that correct?

Krom.

I'm not for sure...but doesn't the frame horns usually stick out on a metric?

THE SMALL METRIC IS NARROWER IN THE CROSSMEMBER, AND THE FRONT HORNS ARE TALLER. THE CHEVELLE STUB HAS A SET OF "TOW HOOK" HOLES ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE FRAME BEHIND THE X-MEMBER,THAT ARE DIAGONALLY CUT.

go to the toolbox down toward the bottom is a frame diagram for each, and just take a few of those measurements and that will tell you which on you have.

Looking to buy something, and wanted a way to visually know what it is quickly.

The Tow Hook thing may be usefull, are they behind the tires kinda?

Thanks, Krom.

The center of the metric frame rails is recessed, the chevelle's aren't. That is the easiest way to tell at a glance.

The metric lower control arm mounts are parallel to the centerline and a chevelles are splayed.

Many other differences but those are the more obvious differences.

I'm thinkin this is the quick way to identify, i called D&M and asked about updating an older chassis i am thikning about buying and he asked what clip it was.

I replied i didnt know, and commented on it having indented side rails and he replied that it was a small metric.

Anyone got a chevelle with the side rails not being smooth?

Ford clips i can spot a mile out, thats all i ever worked with, now we want something lighter, so looking at a small metric.

These guys are right on track when they say look at the frame rails.

I got one of each frame - Chevelle is smooth & metric is indented. I thinks that because the chevelle is a bit stronger (thicker gauge) and the metric being thinner has the indentions to strengthen the rail.

We have a chevelle clip and a metric clip car now, what about the front spring being angled in a chevelle and straight up and down in a metric? Is that always true or just on some chassis designs?

I had a metric clipped car w/nova lowers and the springs had some angle in them.

The Chevelle has smooth side rails but so does the big metric. The top of the Chevelle side rails turn back down towards the ground at about 45 degrees from the top of the side rail towards the center of the car. Metric are flat on top and have a small lip that turns 90 degrees straight down from the top.

Good luck,
Superdave
