Brake floaters decouple the braking forces allowing you to tune braking dynamics without effecting other aspects of the suspension.
The typical dirt setup tightens the car on entry. Most people these days have their car so overly tight on exit that they need a loose entry to get the car around the corner. That is why you don't see brake floaters as often as you used to. Also packaging becomes an issue on 4-bar cars.
