We have an axle that we need to shorten about a 1/4 " . It is a gun drilled axle with a tapered aluminum insert in the gear end. which end should be cut and what is the best method to do this cleanly without damaging the splines . Thank you for your help.

I have tried to cut them with a band saw (won't work) i have tried to cut them several ways i never had any luck but you can take a grinder and grind either end and the grinder will also not mess up the splines i had to grind about 1/2 inch off my axle i have in my car now and i have been running it with no problem what so ever but if you find a way to cut one let me know

Make sure its straight and level and use a chop saw. Clean the splines up on the end when your done with a small file. I have done this many many times.

You should use a chopsaw with an abrasive blade.Cut the inside spline (center section end) Chamfer the splines to help installation and clean or de-burr the splines with the edge of a small file. Try not to overheat the cut.Do a little at a time or use coolant. Don't blue the axle end with the heat of the cut, it will affect the strength of the splines on that end.Good luck!
