I also posted this on the engine tech but am looking for everyones thoughts. Here is what is happening. At idle the thing sounds good. Go out for heat race and it acts like its not on all 8 cly. Thought it may be moisture in the fuel so I added some dry gas and let car run in the pits. Go out for feature and same thing popen and a missing. 5 or 6 laps left to run and bam it ran great. This is the second time the car has been out this year with the same results. I do think its moisture some where.
Anybody else have an thoughts on this?

check for water in distributer. we had same prob and thought it was our carb. fought with it a cpl races and found out that when we wash our car water was getting in cap but by the end of teh race it would eventually dry out and run like a top. hope this helps

Thanks guys. I always but a bag over the carb and distributer But I will check it. The only other thing I noticed was it was hard to get the timing set. Seemed like I couldnt dial it in. The timing mark on the balancer was bouncing from side to side of the timing pin by 20 degrees or so.

The timing should be very steady. The mechanical advance on the stock distributors really gets worn out and need to be checked and have most of the insides replaced. Probably not, but you may have a worn timing chain, but it could be the gear on the distributor. Arcing inside the cap, esp. if it is wet in there. If you have access to someone with a good distributor, try it out then you can eliminate that problem. It could also be a problem with the tach. Try unhooking it and try the timing check again.

Just my opinions of course.

I would like to thank everyone for the info. Here is what I found and am pretty sure what was causing my problem. I use a mallory unilite dist with a mechanical advance which I have locked. On the base plate there are 2 tabs that stick up which stop the upper plate along with the springs. For some reason both tabs were broken and there were metal filings all over inside the cap. I found one on the bottom of the dist that was ground down and the other was on top of the plate with the photo eye. Between the shavings and that chunk of metal flying around I am sure that caused my problem. I orderd a new dist but I think this one will still be ok due to the fact that it is locked anyway. Any one feel the same as I do on this. I am going to call mallory in the morning to get their thoughts on this also.

I "TRIED" to run a unilite for two years, ignition problems all went away when I went to MSD all the way

As much as I would like to run msd really cant afford to switch right now. Trying to spend as little as I can. Daughter is going to college in the fall. There goes the racing money.

Called Mallory today and the tech guy told me I could run it like is due to it being locked anyway. No reply as to why the timing tabs were broke or how. I will give it a shot but a msd is on its way.

I run an MSD now, but if I ever had to change I would go to a DUI.
