Getting ready to skin my car and am trying to get an idea of how much aluminum I need to buy. I need to do doors and quarters, roof and roof posts, hood and nose, roof and the decking next to the driver. My aluminum supplier has it in 4' x 8' pieces and am trying to figure how much to get and I am not sure how much to allow for waste.

Thanks,

dirtbandit

It seems like someone told me it would take 8 sheets to do a car and i think that included the deck but not cockpit area or roof.

It took me 4 sheets of 4'x10' to do deck, doors, quarters, nose, hood, roof posts, sail panels, and back panel with a little left over. I didn't do a roof though.

Best thing to do is get some graph paper and draw out 4x8 squares and draw in the pieces you want to cut out. Each square is a foot, go over a little when you are drawing and it should get you close. This will also help in organizing the pieces so you get the most out of the aluminum sheets.

I can get a Kraft Style set of Doors, Quarters, Sails, roof, B-Pillars, Filler Pannel out of 3 sheets of aluminum with some to spare, but that is also 4x10 sheets.

Have any of you ever seen templates for sale for the body panels?

I made my own.... kinda did my own thing and added some flare to them. I just do 26 inch tall doors and quarters...
And i give the front a pretty good angle (Kraft Style), and i Made templates for Skirts that make the car sit even on the ground, so your skirt gets bigger the further back you go. I could measure up mine and draw them out, and maybe scan and email some if you all would like

Not making a roof it taks me around 5 sheets with some left over and it also depends on how tall you make the doors and quarters and how wide you make the hood. This includes the tub and decking.

Best is if you can get 4x12 sheets you can get alot more out of them with less waste. It takes me about 3 sheets to do a full body with usable left over. Again it is harder to handle the long sheets. I use all .050 for all panels, it holds up alot better than the .040 . I did a few .020 for a customer that was running some high dollar shows and wanted light weight. They only lasted that weekend.

we did our dw8 complete last year and needed 2 sheets (4 x 10) for the deck

1 sheet for the cockpit and 1 sheet for the body panals.

what we do is make the body panals 2' wide and then fold hems top and bottom of whatever we need to make them taper, then we rivet on another color or chrome for mud skirts on the bottom.
this years car will be orange body, chrome or white sails, white or orange roof, last years orange deck skin and white/black and purple graphics.
once you do one the next one is a snap.
