I would think one advantage is less unsprung wieght with coilovers.

the coil over/spring slider debate has been going on for a long time. imca implemented the rule to help keep costs down. but, a coil over kit is, and has been cheaper than a spring slider for a long time. it is a good move if you are slow witted, cant see the real problem, and forgot what an imca mod was intended to be.
the real solution would have been to eliminate the sliders as well as the coilover, and mount the springs on load bolts, as most manufacturers have done. but i am asking this of a sanctioning body that thinks a transmission is the cure for too much motor. but, as i said before, imca is just trying to give the racers what they want.
imca, affordable auto racing

to actually answer the question, the coilover is a way better, and cost effective system, and requires far less maintenance. i will be running a coilover long before a slider, but i will have the springs on top of the diff on a load bolt most of the time.
