the early one with the coarse output shaft or the other saginaw with the fine shaft ?
the early ones that have the potbelly were real weak, the saginaws are the choice between the two.

You'll be fine, I don't think you'll have any trouble with them. That is what I run. Haven't had any trouble.

I have a weird looking trans it looks somthing like a saginaw that is common to us all but it is has verry short output shaft ,has cours splines 168 second and the shift thingies coming out the side are not like the regular 3 speeds they have no threads and loock like some kind of clamp on leavers are used....can anyone identify this ?

What you are describing sounds like an old non syncro low out of a 58 to62 or so Chevy it's basicly the same as 55 to 57 3speed only shorter. We used to run those old things in 3800 to 4000 lb cars with 427 &454s and they held up pretty good. They're getting pretty scarce but you can still get parts for them.

Thanks I think it came out of a 66 chev truck.

yes the late 50 to late 60's three speeds are what you described, they are all 1.68 second (what i have seen). the short ones came out of trucks, and i believe cars came with longer ones.
i have heard they are weak, the input shafts are small. but i have used one in a limited late on pavement, and in my mod for a season with a bad engine. went to a saginaw with the better engine, but the older trans are 20 lbs lighter. if they are strong enough, why carry the extra weight?
thanks
