Need someone to edjamacate a dumb pollack on the GM steering box in my mod. Bought a used DW8 earlier this year. Finally got it on the track and noticed that the steering binds (squeals) about 50% travel to the left, but will turn full travel to the right. Did this guy have the box to act like a steering stop by offsetting the arm on the box past center? Nothing else is binding on the chassis. Thanx in advance.

does your car turn really tight to the right ? My car is set up to turn more to RH than the left, old racer trick so you don't hit the stop while you are sideways, it will cause you to spin. It is a little tricky driving around the pits but don't notice on the track. If you want to change it rotate the pitman arm on the splines.

If the box itself is working properly, then it sounds like the pitman arm isn't set properly. This sounds wrong because as I remember, there is a notch on the spline on the box which lines up on the arm. One thing you could do to check is disconect the pitman arm and turn the wheel all the way to the left, make a mark at the top of the wheel (with tape or something) then turn the wheel all the way back to the right and make a note of how many turns it takes. Turn back to the left 1/2 as many turns and the box should be centered, then reconect the arm. If it doesn't line up you may have the wrong arm, drag link, or the wrong box.

JD. No, when you turn the wheel to the right it is pretty normal, but has full travel. There are no "stops" that I can find on the lower A-arms, etc. It's just as if the arm is offset so that you can only turn 1/2 way to the left. Used to do this with my karts, but with a hose clamp on the steering shaft just above the tie rod.

Badfastjr, the car drives pretty good (considering new driver in through the corner as far as I can tell. If I'm a little tight, a slight brake adjust or throttle bump does the trick to turn it. I'm going to leave it as is for now until I get a little more confortable with running the car. Thanx for all the feedback. We'll hopefully see what happens this Sat night.

This might be oversimplifying, but is the steering box output shaft simply twisted? When we have wrecked boxes in the past, they usually had this problem. Look just above the pitman arm on the botom of the box, and see if the shaft splines run true. GM boxes are easy to twist splines, and the car will turn farther one way than the other.
