I have been trying to do some research as to what steering box to get to replace my worn out one. Based on the Steve Smith book I have it lists the 82-29 Z-28, IROC, 83-87 Monte SS, and a few others for 12.7:1 ratio. Among the others I list the 94 Impala SS. For some reason I can buy the 94 Impala SS box for about $60 less then the others. Is there something different about this Impala box that makes it inferior or is it just a matter or the name of the car the other is supposed to go in?

I used to work for a Chevy dealership in the parts dept. I don't think there is much difference other than part #. The newer year makes the box less "obsolete" to GM than with the older 80-something cars. Therefore it's cheaper.

Just a word of advice, if you are looking at rebuilt boxes make sure you actually check the turns. Many of the rebuilt ones may have the internals swapped and not be what you think you are getting. The casting number may be different as they will interchange also.
