OK, here's a new one.
My modified has a front-end shaking problem when rolling around the track slow/under caution. It doesn't happen all the time, but shakes the steering wheel pretty good. I imagine the tires are shaking back-and-forth, but the crew says they can't see anything and on video I can't see anything either. In race speed, it is fine.
All front end parts are tight. Ball joints are fine. Spindles are fine. Everything looks good. When on jack stands, we will wiggle the tires and both tires along with steering shaft move. Everything seems normal except last night it took us forever to get the toe-out set. It seemed to change at will by just jacking the front up and down. We do swedge tubes as outer tie rods.
Any thoughts?

Did you spin the wheel while it was up to see if it was bent? When you adjust the tie rods do they wabble or stay straight?

The wheels spin fine. One of the swedge tubes is slightly bent but adjusts fine. It does have a slight wabble when turning to adjust. We didn't think this was an issue since it has been like that for some time and problem has only occurred recently.

this is a tough one. We always have it toed out 1/4 inch. We double-check before each race with toe plates. If it somehow is toeing itself in, what is causing it to do this? I think this is our problem but ALL front end parts are tight and in good condition (except the slightly bent swedge tube).

Check Idler Arm if its worn out it will cause this. Pull up and down on it unhooked from center link, it should be tight.

Could be a caster problem. Not enough pos.caster will cause a shake or shimmy.Make sure your spindles are leaning back at the top and that your steering box is properly adjusted.

I had the same problem last year. It turned out that the lower control arm was bent right by the ball joint, so it was binding.

Thanks racers for the responses. Just got back in town.
We changed upper a-arms with new ball joints and will replace outer tie rods. We also checked the camber/caster and found that we were quite off.
Changed settings of wheels and hopefully this will solve the problem. We will also check idler arm (that was my first thought too). Lower ball joints are fine. I'll let you know Sunday if it has stopped.
