I usualy race 1/4 and 3/8 tracks. I run a 5.67 on the 3/8. Have a race coming up on a 1/2 + mile and want to stay below 7400 rpm. What range of gears am looking for?

.486 will get you aproximently 6900 rpms with a decent 383 with .500s you get about 7200

I run 1/2+ track every weekend. Usually 486 to 514 is the norm. Will definitely keep ya under 7400. Good luck.

Zero- Trade 'ya a set of 5.14's for the 4.86 - I've got the opposite problem - 5.14's are too much gear - engine runs out of steam about 2/3 of the way down the straight...

ive got a set of 4.86 i'd like to trade for 5.43 or 5.67 if anyone is interested.

Last year on alky we were running 7000-7200 with 4.86. This year on gas we are barely getting 7000 with a 5.29. Same track 1/2 mile, long straight, tight corners.

Just to offer a different point of view, I will tell you that we won a race at the half mile in Owatonna, MN four years ago with a 4.33 gear (and a pretty healthy 406). I couldn't tell you RPM's because we don't ever run a tach, but if you are on a half mile where momentum is key, think about a 4.71 or even 4.56.
