I have had several flexplates tear up and my question is , what is the correct way to set the clearance between the drive and the flywheel? I have a tilton super starter and a 153 tooth flywheel. Thanks

I think you should have about .100-.125" clearance between the starter pinion and the flex plate. When gear is engaged, there should be a small amount of clearance also between the gears. Make sure you run actual starter bolts as they have a shoulder on them that engage a 1/4" threadless area in the block; this really solidifies the starter to the block. If you run plain old bolts, they flex and chew both gears up.

in the engaged position you should have about .030-.045(about the size of standard paper clip) clearance between the peak of one gear tooth and the valley of the other when meshed together.
