I need your guys help if possible. I have a Howe full floater in a mod. I had to tap in the axles when I installed them. They wouldn't just slide in. I thought after running them that they would loosen up. Well, I need to do a gear change and can't get one of them out. My buddy brought over a tab with a ring on it that we bolted to the axle and was pulling on with a chain and bar but still can't get one of them out. Any suggestions on how to get it out? I haven't seen any pullers that would work. I'm really out of ideas at this point.

Thanks for your help!

find a large piece of pipe that will fit over the axle cover plate but inside the studs, and gives you about 3 inches of height over where the axle cap bolts too... then get a piece of heavy plate and drill a hole for some threaded rod(screws into axle) then weld that plate to the top of the tubing...place tube on hub and screw rod through hole and then run a nut down on the plate to start pulling axle out..hopefully this made sense and also works for you like it does for me... also when you get it out try rotating it a spline at a time to see if it goes in easy in a certain spot...if it does you may have a bent housing.

have you tried to remove the drive flange and then use your home made axle puller?

Jack the rear end off the floor. If the bearings are loose the hubs will bind on the axles. After you pull the axles, torque the bearings to 3 lbs of preload. If you have China made bearing in it, plan on checking them every week. Or put Timken bearings and races in.

I don't what kind of center section you have, aspool or what but when we had a broken axle we pull the pin out of the carrier and put a long bar in from the other side and beat it out that way

Well maybe you can screw that ring into the end of the axle and use a big slide hammer. Make shure it is screwed in all the way so you dont pull the threads out though.

Get yourself a slide hammer and weld the correct bolt on the end of it and try that

JACK UP THE REAR END AND LOOSEN UP THE CENTER SECTION, THEN USE A SLIDE HAMMER, LET US KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.

when you go back together put some antiseize on the splines that mate up to the drive flang.

what do you mean 3 lbs ofpreload, i know this sounds like a dumb question.
i torque my axle nuts at 40ftlbs. it seems tight but was recomended by wayne brooks, and an afco guy. once it heats up it will spin fine.

40 ft lbs of torque is how tight the NUT is.........as Gene stated, bearing pre-load should be 3ft lbs of torque...... the differance is this...... 40 is how tight the nut is.....3 is the amount of torque it take to ROTATE the hub with everything bolted together, ready to go racing...

Thanks guys for all your suggestions! I finally got it out. With all the force we were applying with the 6' pry bar I thought that it would have never came out and essentially wrote off Saturday, but my friend brought over a BIG slide hammer and with 5 hits it came crashing out!!! I guess I need to find me one or make one. Thanks again guys you were all a big help.
