Just wondering what all you guys are running for motor oil in alchohol motors ? I switched from Kendal to Redline synthetic last year in hopes of being able to run 4 or 5 shows between oil changes.When I drained the Redline out the first time it looked black and not to favorable to lubricate a race motor.I decided it was too expensive and went back to fossil oil .

We used to use kendall as a conventional and mobil1 as a synthetic. But when kendall changed their formula we switched to valvoline vr1 and also went to royal purple aynthetic. The valvoline is a little thicker oil than the kendall but is formulated for racing and is compatible with alcohol. We would change conventional every 2 nights. We never had any trouble with Mobil1 even though its not supposed to be alcohol compatible, but we didnt run them rich either so didnt get much past rings. Last year we tried Royal Purple 41 which is alcohol compatible and is stricltly a racing oil. Good results with it as well. Either way we would change filter every 2 nights and oil every 6. I would put royal purple at the top for syn but unless you buy bulk it is about twice the cost of M1.

Castrol GTX 20-50 change after each race never had a problem ....same mtor 5 years running.

Napa is my sponor and they got me a case of that new Valvoline racing oil not VR1. Anyways it's alky compatible,we change it every 4 nights and it looks great when it comes out. They don't stock it it has to be special order!

DirtBuster,Thanks for the reply.What would the cost be in bulk for the Royal purple ? How about the vr1 valvoline ? JUst trying to do a cost comparison.
I have also ran castrol GTX with good results if we changed every week.( 2 races ).

I dont remember for sure what the exact cost is for RP but if you buy it in quarts its like 8$ a quart, 5 gallon jugs are like 6.50/quart and 55 gallon drums are like $5/quart.
The vr1 was like 2-2.25/quart, i dont know about bulk on it.
Mobil1 can usually be found for around 3.75-4.25 especially if you can find the 5qt jugs.

I did the cost comparison thing a while back when we were running Mobil1 we were getting it around 4$/qt and i figured that if we ran it 6 nights and changed a filter every 2 nights it was cheaper to run than 2.00 conventional oil changing every 2.

I have heard that synthetic oil isn't recyclable. Does anyone know? That would be an issue for me. We used to run Kendall but noticed when they changed the formula. I usually change every race but would also like to run it longer.

i have always ran valvaline either 40 or 50 wieght racing oil, and i NEVER HAVE BEARING WEAR. after two seasons they still look new.
but now most any name brand oil is a good oil, but i would pick one and stick with it.

We were running 76 Nascar 20-50 in 2001, then for 2002 switched to Amsoil 20-50 synthetic, and this year we ran Amsoil 0-30 almsot all year. I put 36 shows (at 8000+ rpms) on my motor and the bearings look great. I think I changed to oil only 2-3 times all year. I did change the filter every other night so I added a fresh quart often. The Amsoil dealer told me to go 10 nights at least between oil changes, at it really worked. I was expecting the engine to blow up and eat the bearings with such light oil, but no problems so far. we use valvoline vr1 50wt, we change the oil a minimum of every other night if not every, its cheap insurance for the engine to always have fresh oil in it. by the end of the season the oil coming out of the engine is almost as clean as the oil going in.

We run Pennzoil 25w-50 race oil, awesome stuff. Used to use Castrol 20w-50, always came out very milky, no matter how "warmed up" the engine got. The new Pennzoil stuf is great, no oil presure differences either.

we stuck with the 20w-50 kendall this year and had no problems. we changed oil every 2 nights and filters every night. we warm our engine up to 180 water and atleast 160 oil before we race. our engine builder just took it apart and told us it was one of the cleanest engines he's seen in a long time. we had 60 to 70 nights on it. the bearings looked spotless.

All we have ever used is Mobile 1 synthetic. We change it out every three races and have had no issues at all.

I'm going to QUIT changing the oil in my race motors... Every time I do, they blow up within the next couple of nights.

I run Castrol 20w-50, or closest to it that was on sale. Always changed it every other night. Only problem I ever had was with an oil filter. Had a FRAM filter collapse. AC pf-35 or the good NAPA/Wix filters from then on.

modman97,We have used a system one oil filter for 12 years.They cost around $50 bucks.They work so well for inspecting from week to week to see whats going on inside the motor.They can be a pain to get clean but I use a vaporiser gun and solvent without too much problems.We also use a billet filter adapter to hold the filter on.Its never happened to me but I've seen filters knocked off from running over something on the track.Usually its from the stock,cheap filter adapter brocken.

bkap, synthetics are fully recyclable. Check out my website for all the dirt on synthetics. Excuse the pun...lol

my engine builder said penzoil was good for alchol engines because the alchol will seperate from the oil real well

this is what many dirt late model teams use with thier 20,000-30,000+ dollar motors.
its supposed to be the greatest stuff ever. i am going to switch to it.
i know alot of big late model guys use it.

Ran Valvoline a couple times but primarily Ran 10W40 Castrol GTX and 20W50 - have 4 seasons on same rings/bearings in a 355 - only turn the engine 6500-6600 - Changed oil every 4-6 nights. End of season it started getting a little blowby so I'm tearing it down for a re-ring/bearing soon and will let you know what everything looks like - it still holds good oil pressure before/after racing so I'm expecting the bearings to be in good shape...

I have talked to a respectable engine builder where I live and he says in their car they run Royal Purple Synthetic oil. They drain it every 3 weeks into a clean pan, place a mesh screen over it (to keep trash from getting in it) and set it in the sun. They leave it there for a while for the sun to evaporate the methanol that is in it then they put in back in the motor, and then change it after another 3 weeks. He said he does not have any problems with it, and he is getting 6 weeks out of his oil. He does change his filter after every 3 weeks.

We run RP and change filter evey other race and run it 6 races before changing it. The alky(if there is any) and water will seperate after it sits and cools off and sit at the bottom of the pan. All you have to do is pull the drain plug and drain a little off the bottom then refill. After doing this we found we weren't getting a noticeable amount of alky in the oil and stopped doing it.

I wouldnt even think about draining the oil letting it sit outisde for awhile then putting it back in. I dont care how careful you are there is a big risk of contamination there.

why does everybody change the oil so often? Since they took Zink out of the oil does anybody use any oil additives? I believe that the car companies went to roller cam motors because of taking out the zink. Wasn't as slippery and the new cam shafts were wearing out faast. Anybody hear different?

bb46, regardless of some oil companys claims oil doesnt break down unless overheated. EVERY engine does however have some blow by, being as there is not an oil filter made that will take fuel or carbon out of your oil, you need to change it regularly.

how often is up to personal prefferance. we like to monitor our filters and the little magnet on the drain plug. therefore it gets dropped every two weeks

we run the Mobil 1 Synthetic. We replace the oil every three features no matter what we are doing. been 2 years now on our engine and going strong. A rock took out the oil pan one night and all we had to do was polish the rotating assembly.

We have run 125 plus shows in the last 2 1/2 years on Schaeffers Oil, and have had NO failures whatsoever!!! This is the best oil available for a race motor PERIOD. We run 20-50 in a full roller spec. motor at 8250rpm. I change the filter (NAPA racing 1060R) every other show, add 1 quart, and change the oil every 8-10 shows.

Schaeffers has Moly lube in it, and it usually looks the same coming out as it looks going in. The best oil there is!
