Track championship bonuses to figure
in standings for five I.M.C.A. divisions
VINTON, Iowa (Jan. 9) - There's a bonus or two waiting at the end of the season for I.M.C.A. drivers winning a track championship in 2003.
Drivers will receive a bonus 'win' for each of as many as two track championships earned during the regular point season. Each bonus will be worth 40 points, and replaces lower feature finishes that had been used in determining na-tional and regional point totals and standings.
Two bonuses have already been given in the Modified division. Late Models and Stock Cars ran for a single bonus, while the upcoming season will be the first for bonuses in the Sprint Car and Hobby Stock classes.
"We just want to be consistent. There's no reason for any difference between the divisions," said Brett Root, vice president of operations for I.M.C.A. "What the bonus is, really, is a reward for supporting a local race track throughout the entire season and winning the championship."
The bonus 'win' will also be used, if necessary, as part of the tie-breaking process for determining top 20 national and regional standings. They are not a win in the same sense, however, as an on the track, take the checkered flag type of feature victory and will not be added to driv-ers' career totals.
There will be no bonus for the SportMod division being introduced this year by I.M.C.A., but it's expected that the system will be added as the number of cars in the class grow.
