Barnett Winter Series at Canyon opens Jan. 18 PEORIA, Ariz. (Dec. 14) - Winning an I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified feature event in the Barnett Harley-Davidson Winter Series at Canyon Raceway should be at least twice as exciting in 2003. The winner's share of the purse has been doubled to $2,000 for each of the four Saturday feature races planned at the 3/8 mile clay speedplant near Peoria. Qualifying for each 24-car main event field will pay a minimum of $200. Opening night is Jan. 18. The Modified series continues Jan. 25, Feb. 1 and Feb. 8, with a non-sanctioned pure stock series slated to run on the same four dates. Pit gates will open at 10 a.m. and racing starts at 1 p.m. each day. Feature events for the Modifieds will be 30 laps, with the number of qualifying races to be determined by car counts. Rain dates will be on Sundays. Awards will be given to the top 10 drivers in final point standings. National and D&M Performance Western Region points will be awarded; the series title will also be considered as a track championship and will be worth a bonus win used in determining national and regional standings at the end of the 2003 race season. Tow rigs, haulers and race cars can be left at the track during the week; camping spots will also be available. Questions about the seventh annual series can be directed to race director Sandy Combs at (623) 937-9769.
