I.M.C.A.-sanctioned Modifieds added
to Oktoberfest program at LaCrosse
WEST SALEM, Wis. (March 19) - Oktoberfest at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway will have a familiar feel for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified drivers who race at Super Nationals in September.
I.M.C.A.-sanctioned Modifieds will be a part of the 33rd annual Oktoberfest, scheduled Oct. 3-6. They'll race on the 5/8 mile paved oval Friday night, Oct. 4, in what is believed to be the first-ever sanctioned appearance by the division at the West Salem track.
"This is like the asphalt version of Super Nationals at Boone. Ours is in the same vein as Super Nationals," said pro-moter Chuck Deery. "Drivers come from all over and it's a lot of fun. Racing is secondary to having fun."
One of the similarities the two events share is huge car counts, numbering well into the hundreds.
Fifteen different classes will compete over the course of Oktoberfest and the Modifieds will be joined by four of them on the Friday card.
Track and I.M.C.A. officials have batted around the idea of holding a sanctioned race at Oktoberfest for several years, agreeing that the timing was right in 2002.
"The Oktoberfest is such a huge regional event," Deery said. "We felt we needed to raise the bar for Modifieds and the obvious choice was I.M.C.A."
"We want to be involved in more of the premier short track events around the country and Oktoberfest is certainly one of them," I.M.C.A Vice President of Operations Brett Root said. "We are pleased that our members will get the opportu-nity to be part of such a prestigious event."
Purse for the race has yet to be determined. Pit gates will open at 8 a.m. on Oct. 4, with practice continuing throughout the day and the first heat races at 6 p.m.
