Racing action heats up despite chilly weather; Bone dominates Coca-Cola
Classic
by Jane H. Estes
Racing fans answered the age-old question, "Is it ever to cold to race"
when they filed into North Central Arkansas Speedway this weekend to watch
racers compete in the Coca-Cola Classic $10,000 to Win feature race. Of
course the answer to the question was "no."
Prior to the 50-lap IMCA Modified feature race, fans were treated to three
days of hot laps, heat races and feature races. Approximately 130 Modifieds,
Superstocks, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Cruisers were on hand for the
three-day racing event.
NCAS Modified favorites competing for a chance in the Coca-Cola Classic
$10,000 to win included current NCAS IMCA Modified points champion Rob
Muilenburg #59, Wayne Graybeal #101, Rex Sawyer #29, DJ Twitty #4, Jerry
Croney #14C, Lance Stilling #129, Greg Hughes #7H, Jason Hughes #8H and
Modified newcomer John Mostrom #J9. Of the local favorites, only Muilenburg
and Sawyer would advance to the 50-lap feature race.
Racing action began when 16 Mini Stocks lined the track for their 20-lap
feature with Ken Medley #8C on the pole and Scott Cooper #25C on the
outside. When the green flag dropped, Cooper took control of the field
followed by Mike Thompson #24T, Jack Essary #73, Dave Williams #29 and Wayne
DeGase #66. In lap 2, Jimmy Joe McDaniel #6, Ike Moore #4M and Jack Riddle
#2 got together in turn 2 bringing out the first caution of the feature.
At
the same time, Steve Farris #90S pulled off the track with mechanical
problems. On the restart, Cooper continued his lead and Medley looped his
car in turn 4 but the caution flag was not thrown. On lap 8, Medley left
the
track with mechanical problems. Cooper was still out front followed by
Thompson, Essary, Dave Williams, Ron Ogborn J4P, DeGase and Johnny Kelly
#57. At the halfway point in the race, Cooper was still leading the way
when
Williams slid into the infield giving up the 4th spot. On the following
lap,
McDaniel slipped in turn 4 and Bobby Moore 4B brought out the second caution
when he looped his car in turn 4 and stalled on the track. On the restart,
Cooper, Essary and Thompson came out of turn 4 3-wide in a battle for the
lead. Cooper won the battle on the next lap and resumed the top position
followed by Essary and Thompson. Cooper took the checkered flag first for
the win followed by Essary and Thompson. Finishing out the top 5 were
Williams and DeGase.
Fifteen Hobby cars took the green flag in their feature race with Mike
Mayfield #12 on the pole and the M1 of Rustin Miller on the outside. On
lap
1, Miller was out front followed by Mayfield and Richard Reinmuth #67 when
James Mayfield #34, Stuart Malone #29, Jayson Fisk #73 and Robert Dale
Gregory #4 got together in turn 4. On the original restart, Miller retook
the lead followed by Reinmuth, M. Mayfield, J. Mayfield, and Malone. On
lap
3, the caution flag flew when Dennis Fisk #32 looped his car in turn 2.
On
the restart, it was Miller, Reinmuth, M. Mayfield, J. Mayfield and the 4DB
of Pete Harris. On lap five, J. Fisk hooked a tire in turn 4 bringing out
another caution. On the restart, Miller and Reinmuth raced side by side
for
the lead while Tim Sheehan in the M2 moved up into third followed by J.
Mayfield and Harris. On lap 10, the caution flag flew once again when
Reinmuth looped his truck in turn 3 and Sheehan left the track with a flat
tire. On the restart, Miller continued his lead and Harris moved into
second. On lap 13, Malone brought out the caution flag when he looped in
turn 2. At the halfway point in the race, Miller was still out front
followed by Harris, J. Mayfield, Tony Hardaway, Ken Medley and Ken Williams.
On lap 21, the final caution was thrown when Sheehan looped his car in turn
4. Miller would hold his lead from green to checkers for the win followed
by
Harris and J. Mayfield. Finishing out the top five were M. Mayfield and
Medley.
Fifteen Super Stocks charged on to the track for their feature race of
the
evening with Steve Holzkamper #5 on the pole and Jody Tillman #85 on the
outside. When the green flag flew, Tillman took the lead followed by
Holzkamper, Sean Williams #82, Chris Davidson Y2K, Eddie Martin #71, Greg
Ott #12C and Joe Davenport #28. On lap 2, Holzkamper took the lead from
Tillman. For the next six laps, Holzkamper and Tillman raced side by side
for the lead. On lap 7, a caution was thrown for debris on the track. On
the
restart, Holzkamper moved to the front and the #90 driven by Josh Farris
looped in turn 4. Once again, Holzkamper took the lead followed by Tillman,
Williams, Martin, and Davidson while Davenport and Ott battled for sixth.
On
lap 9, Davenport moved into sixth and Curt Cotter #13 moved past Ott into
seventh. On lap 13, Davidson slid going into turn 4 and Davenport moved
into
fifth followed by Cotter. On lap 18, Heath Davenport #7d entered the action
when he passed Ott on the front stretch moving into eighth. On lap 23,
Tillman passed Holzkamper for the lead and Davenport fell off the pace.
Two
laps later, Holzkamper retook the lead and the caution was thrown when Joe
Davenport was forced to leave the track due to mechanical problems. On the
restart, Holzkamper took the lead and held it all the way to the checkered
flag for the win followed by Tillman and Williams. Finishing out the top
five were Martin and Cotter.
Eight 2-man cruiser teams lined up for their feature race of the evening
with Bryant/Curtis #77 on the pole and Bobby Raulston and teammate on the
outside. When green flag racing began, Curtis/Bryant were out front followed
by Raulston, Farris/Ulferts #5, Richardson/Van Duren #03 and Miller/Miller
#807. On lap 2, the caution was thrown for Farris/Ulferts when they got
sideways coming out of turn 1. On the restart, Raulston got to the front
first and Farris/Ulferts began making their way through traffic. On lap
6,
Raulston continued to lead followed by Richardson/Van Duren, the Crisenbery'
s #29, Bryant/Curtis, Miller/Miller and Farris/Ulferts. On lap 8,
Bryant/Curtis fell off the pace and on lap 9 Miller/Miller looped their
car
in turn 4. On lap 12, Richardson/Van Duren took the lead when Raulston hit
the wall coming out of turn 4. On the restart, Richard/Van Duren retook
the
lead followed by the Crisenberys, Farris/Ulferts, Dockins/Dockins and
Miller/Miller. For the next several laps, Richardson/Van Duren and the
Crisenberys raced side by side for the lead, but Richardson/Van Duren pulled
ahead to take the checkered flag first followed by Dave and Gene Crisenbery
and Farris/Ulferts. Finishing out the top five were Miller/Miller and
Dockins/Dockins.
The crowd was on their feet for the 4-wide parade lap of the IMCA Modified
50-lap Coca-Cola Classic feature race with Stephen Muilenburg #33 on the
pole and the 12X of Johnny Bone, Jr. on the outside. When the green flag
flew, Muilenburg took the lead followed by Bone, Kelly Shryock #3, Mark
Noble #75, Jon Tesch #14 and Marc Robe #2R. On lap 11, Bone got past
Muilenburg for the lead. On lap 14, the caution was thrown when Holzkamper
and Muilenburg got together in turn 2. On the restart, Bone was out front
followd by Nobel, Muilenburg, Shyrock, Robe and Tesch. On lap 22, Muilenburg
clipped a barricade tire that had rolled on to the track and was forced
into
the infield. On the restart, Holzkamper and Nobel raced side by side for
the
lead when the #8 of Jason Miller stalled on the front stretch and Rob
Muilenburg #59 left the track with mechanical problems. During the pace
laps, S. Muilenburg broke a tie rod and was done for the night. At the
halfway point, Bone was out front followed by Nobel, Shryock, Robe and
Tesch. On lap 39, the UFO of Wayne Brooks challenged Tesch for fifth, but
on
lap 43 Brooks left the track with mechanical problems. Johnny Bone, Jr.
found his way to the checkered flag to win the Coca-Cola Classic $10,000
to
Win. Noble finished second followed by Shyrock, Robe and Tesch.
