Crippen collects Squeals on Wheels win at Imperial
By Gary Jacob
IMPERIAL, Calif. (March 9) - Leading all 50 laps from a front row start, Adam Crippen wheeled his way to a $3,000 win in the Squeals on Wheels 50 lap special for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modifieds Saturday night, during the Mid-Win-ter Fair at the Imperial Valley Speedway.
Crippen was chased at the checkered flag by track point leader Mark Allison. Duane Rogers rallied to third with Ari-zona visitor Jeff Collinsworth fourth ahead of Wyoming long tow Justen Yeager.
The 50 lap main was run with a fuel break at lap 25. As in the "B" qualifier, a multi-car tangle forced a re-start with six cars involved and Chris Duchac was done for the night.
Crippen raced into the lead over Bill Miller, Eric Evans and John Linn. Jason Lee had to pit with a flat tire on lap three.
Having had recent success at the track, rookie Rich Rose took fourth from Linn on lap six and third from Evans on lap eight. Allison broke into the top five on lap 10. Crippen held a solid third of a lap lead over Miller and that distance in-creased when Miller and Rose tangled.
Ted Robinson lost a lap when he drove through a lap 16 spin, while Allison moved up to third. The first caution came on lap 20 when fifth place duelers Miller, Mark Harrison and Josh Wood tangled. Steve Linthicum lost laps when he pitted on the caution.
The attempt to get to the lap 25 fuel break was slowed when Wood, Harrison and Evans broke on successive re-starts. Finally, the lap 25 break came with Crippen leading Allison, Rose and Yeager.
When racing resumed after the break, Jeff Collinsworth was riding fifth ahead of Bruce Kaplan, Mike Corning, Duane Rogers and Bart Reid.
Yeager took third from Rose on lap 33. Corning broke on lap 34 and Kaplan made hard contact with the front wall. Rose had to pit with a flat tire and Reid's attempt to take fourth from Rogers on the re-start saw Reid spin after making contact with Rogers. Reid dropped out and Evans got into the turn one fence.
Joe Wiegman was now fifth, but he also pulled off the track. Crippen had a scary moment on lap 44 when Lee spun right in front of him in turn one. Robinson and Corning were eliminated when they crashed in turn three. Rose broke and Yeager dropped from third to fifth in the final four laps when he pushed high a couple times coming off turn four.
Defending track champion Doug Peterson broke in hot laps to end his night early and Johnny Swenson was also done before the heat action.
