How many of you run an alt? What are the pros/cons of running and alt? Currently I dont use one, but wondering if I should or keep running like it is.

We ran alternators in previous years, but the competition has been getting stiffer so we're not going to run one this year. We need every horse we can get.

There was a post somewhere that they dynoed with and without an altenator. Without one they gained 1 hp. That could of been a change in the gas or air temp. i think there is too many factors to say it was just that. Someone also said their lap times fell off. I run one. I always will run one. On my hobby stock i plan on running one. JMO though.

Without an alt can the battery support a car with a computer and an electric fuel pump? Just bought a car and the alts bad so was thinkin of just ditchin it all together. What do you think.

i never ran with an alt and most of the guys i run with dont but we all change batterys in between the heat and the main when your battery goes low you lose power that way to i also know a guy who runs with a switch in his car so he can turn the alt on and off when he wants to i'm actually thinking of going that route my self

How long are your races? We run 4 hot laps a 10 lap heat and a 15-20 lap feture. We use a yellow top ultama. Get em at advanced. It has lasted through 2 seasons. We only charge it before the race at home before we load up. We did it because its just a lot less stuff to go wrong. And yes we do run a msd box.

We have 8 team cars, and none of us run alts.We charge the batteries before each race, and have never had 1 go dead. running without the alt. is 1 less thing to go wrong.

I run with out an alt. 4-hot laps, 8-heat laps and 15 feature laps. Got a cheap 650cca battery $39.00. I charge it every other weekend, no other charging. You don't need an alt. If you run a alt you should run a resistor to drop volt at the coil. All cars on the street are wired that way. Only full voltage for cranking to start motor.

The best way to go alternatorless is to use a 12 volt batt for starting. Then use an 18 volt for the gauges (ok on 18 v) and the ignition. HEI ignitions love voltage. MSDs won't take more than they need. As much as anything the 18 v is insurance the voltage never gets too low. Once ran an HEI in an alcohol sprint car with 13:1 compression. Ran .065 plug gap. Used three small 6 volt batts wired to give 18 v. The HEI and the batteries weighed les than the magneto!
