I just bought a Geo Metro for a FWD compact car class. I went to eBay to see if there was a market for tail light lenses and other parts, to help pay for the project, and I found several adds for a resister that you plug into the Air Temp sensor the adds 20 hp!WOW!! 20 hp for .99 to 9.99. Is there anything to this? I don't think so....but 20 hp for .99!!! That's like adding another cylinder to my 3 popper!!!...loojack

OK, I just had to buy one! Just to see what it's about. Cost me 4.49 including shipping.
I was hoping someone who understood electronics could explain it using ohm's law or something....Something about a fool and his money..... Oh well,....loojack

I've heard that this resistor fools the computer into thinking that incoming air is cold so it compensates by calling for more fuel to be dumped in. Seems logical that you could see some HP increase from this but I'm not sure about 20 HP.

When you get that installed & give the car a spin, please post your results. I'm sort of thinking about trying this myself & I'd like to know if there is any noticeable HP gain. I've got a buddy that wants to try putting a potentiometer in the circuit so we could try different resistance settings but I don't know if it will work.

I'm waiting to get it. The thing that amazes me is that all the adds are almost the same.(different user name and locations)One add states that their resisters are rated differently for different cars. Anyway, a 20 hp gain on a 46 hp engine is worth the $4.49!
HEHEHEHEHE.....loojack

A metro has 46 hp WOW!?!? lol. One thing i would do is leave it out get your lap times put it in and get your lap times. I have a buddy that swears it made his car slower. I have no clue though. Too new school for me i go with the old school carb.

Hey loojack,

Did you get that resistor in yet? I was wondering if it gave you any help or not.

that sure would make you have the fastest go~kart on the block. I just can't buy into those outrageously cheap high HP gains it is usually a way to lighten your wallet into their pockets.an example of a 20+HP gain is the Esslinger 4 cyl.crate engines,a 200+ HP 2300 cc costs $7499.00 and a 220+ HP 2500cc costs $7999.00 price difference is $500.00,by my math is $25.00 per HP.

Not yet, season hasn't started yet. Finishing the go-cart now, just have to figure out where the resister goes.....(HEHEHE)...loojack

When you get it you will see that it is a box with a 69 cent radio shack resistor inside.Plug it in and it will tell your 'putor it cold out and dump more gas in(in theory)The computor will "learn" this is the wrong basesetting and go back to factory specs after awhile.Had a big discussion about this on the ranger station website awhile ago
