I have a 87 mustang hatch back i need to skin/gut out and wanted to know how far to take it. We are only allowed a very simple cage. just 2 post to the roof and some basic bracing at the door. I notced there was quite a bit of bracing on the roof line of the car and wanted to know if I removed everything down to the sheet metal...if it would weaken the chassis too much. We use dot tires and stock 4cyl motor.

I would not gut to much in that area. You may remove 5-10 lbs but it's not worth the strength lost. I would look into replacing the front bumper with aluminium or newer plastic type. Lightening the nose will give you a bigger advantage.

i thought hatch backs were a stronger piece due to a double walled floor to compensate for the hatch.

Notch back are stronger! I have ran both and there's not much differents in them. Both type run up front. At my track the 2002 champ had a hatch back and 2003 switched to a notch back and once again won the championship. I'm a good freind of his and we were talking about the differents and he perfered the hatch. He told me it handled better. Between the mustangs I've had I do better with hatches.
Good Luck
