Has anyone ever heard of filing the ends of crank and rod bearings? I was told that in the extreme high reving indy cars, one of the details during eng. assembly was to polish a small taper at the matching points of the bearings. The bearings are suppose to match better on clearances, and the clearances are minutely adjustable by doing this. Does this sound a bit far fetched or is this a feseble method of having matched bearing clearances??

Its a new concept for me but would love to hear what experience others may have had attempting this.

Don't mess with them. The ends off the bearings are what keeps the bearings from spinning. Those little tangs are only there to locate the bearings and do not keep them for spinning. It is "bearing crush" that causes an interference with the rod that hols them in. The two bearing halves are actually bigger than diameter of the bore in the rod and when you tighten them they crush together. what they are probably doing is putting a slight chamfer on the edges to prevent the edges from mushrooming out and making possible contact with the crank. The risks of making a mistake far outweigh the possibility of a benefit.

Exactly what they are talking about. Not for novices. When they say high rpm they mean HIGH RPM's. Not us lowbuckers that might tough 8 or 9 on occassion. Yes 15 grand + out there and we unfortunately don't have the time or money to get there. *smiles*

When I first heard about it I was skeptical. I am definately a budget racer and need durability even if a little power is compromised. It appears this is for the big boys only and not the weekend hobbyist. I do appreciate the feed back. I must think about this stuff too much. Always looking at doing something new.

Thanks again
