My son wants to get a Toyota Celica mini stock to run on a dirt quartermile. He has been told to look for rack and pinion steering and not to buy a car with a steering box. Does anybody know the reasoning behind this?

I am running a 83 celica with rack and pinion and it works great! I took off the PS pump and running it without it so it is a little harder to handle at low speeds off the track... but otherwise, I love it!

I assume that the main reason would be the power robbed by the power steering system. We ran a Dodge Colt without power steering all year with no problems. The car I'm about tobuild up for ministock is so old (69) it never had power steering.

Rack and pinion steering is a lot easier to set up and has a lot less parts to cause problems. Have run both and the rack and pinion is by far the best way to go.
