I run on a 3/8 track in Texas that started the "mini".... and it is scary out there >> people are throwing anything with a 4 cyl together in about a week and then driving it... there are a lot of cars out there but none of them have any experience and you have to dodge things falling off of them (trunk lids/ bumpers..) because they are hitting everything on the track! >> They are starting to get some standards but there is a long way to go!

Our track is, they say 1/4, but honestly I don't think it is quite that big.

1/2 mile is not a biggie. I run a pinto with a 4 banger at a 1/2 mile track. I am the slowest CAR (not driver, heh heh) out there. I run a 23.5 second lap average. The fastest car is about 21.5/22 sec per lap. That works out to an average speed of ABOUT 80 mph for the whole lap, faster in straights and slower in the turns. I dont know of anyone in my class that ever puts it in third gear, not too shabby for a 4 banger only in 2nd gear on a 4 or 5 spd tranny.

Also, the "show" depends on how many cars are running. One night we only had 3 cars, and our biggest night was 11 cars. 5 years ago they had an average of about 25 minis every race night, then the track shut down. it reopened two years ago and all classes are growing steadily. When I started racing this year (rookie year), I was the 5th consistantly showing driver. At the end of the season there were 8 consistants that showed up weekly.

But anyways, I prefer to race at a 1/4 mile track. keeps the cars close together. I actually led 7 of 10 laps in the main on the 1/4 mile track. But they dont run minis there normally, it was a special invitation on a Saturday night from a neighboring town since our track (Friday night racing)was rained out.
