You will get many answers on that question. Who knows which one is right. I have run 20-50 Castrol for many years, with no bearing problems yet. Your 15-40 should be ok if you have a good bottom end. Ask what brand the racers at your track run, that don't have motor problems. Whatever weight or type you run, be sure the water temp. is at least 140 degrees before running over 3000 rpms. Dist. gears don't like cold oil.

I only use valvoline. I have used the 50wt but I have recently switched this year to 10-30 valvaline. JD Laramee said that that is what he ran and it did show a difference. But just as 50 pinto said you will get all kinds of answers. The main thing is to remember to change it after atleast every 2-3 races I never go over 4. Bobby

I run a 15-30 valv, one thing to rember 5 pounds of press at idle is good 30 or moore when rpm is high, and the thinner the oil the less the iol pump has to work there for more rpms and 1 or 2 hp gain. just the way i run but ask around. I also run 30wt in rear end (less friction) and 50 wt in tranny. no problems yet (knock on wood)

I am new to dirt track racing, but I do own an oil business and have done lots of research on this... the best one that I have found is Schaeffer Oil >> SUPREME 7000 RACING OIL SAE 20W-50 http://schaefferoil.com/

This post is not based on any Scientific Research, Based Solely on personal Experience & watching Oil Pressure & Temp gauges during various Driving Conditions!

I run ONLY Mobil 1 Synthetic on my personal vehicles, 10w40 & 10w30, It has Superior hold up power for instance....

If you run Penzoil in a car angine for 4,000 miles & drain it, stick your finger in it, squish it around & smell it... it will feel "gritty" and smell like your wife's burnt cookin!

Now invest the extra few dollars per Qt & try Mobil 1, same weight oil you was running before, now run that Oil for 4,000 miles, change filter, add enuff to replace what you lost & run it another 3,000 miles. This time drain it, squish your fingers together & smell it.... Looks like oil, Feels like oil & smells almost like new oil! ( My Jeep recommends UP TO 6,000 miles between oil changes on 6qt capacity)

I am not a spokesperson for any Oil Company, I am a Welder & Rookie Race Driver. This is what i've learned from personal experience & the "Squishy" method

ALSO, I HIGHLY recommend a bottle of PRO-LONG or MOTOR-UP at your first oppurtunity! DO NOT use Slick50, One of the Main Ingredients in Slick50 is Parrafin (Wax), Does Anybody want WAX deposits in thier Engine?????

Pro-Long saved my engine in my Dodge Dakota when I broke an oil sending unit line playin in the mud & squirted all my oil out! I ran it hard getting out of the mud & 50 miles back home before I checked under the hood & there as oil EVERYWHERE except IN the engine!

I have a '93 Dodge Dakota 4X4, 220,000 miles Original Drive train, purchased new in 1993 & a '98 Jeep Cherokee, 166,000 miles, Original Drive train, Purchased new in Jan 99. I have had to change the oil "a Few" times & tried almost all the oil's on the market!

As far as Synthetic Oil for Racing, Mobil 1 also offers a 20W50 Full synthetic, Will get back to you end of next season to let you know how it goes..........

Mobil 1 is the only oil I recommend to anybody, my peronal "WILL NOT USE IF GIVEN TO ME" list includes: Castrol Syntec, ANY Penzoil product (including Synthetic), or any "Synthetic Blend" they take 1% synthetic oil & 99% reg oil & jack the price up 150%! you want "Blend" next time you change oil, get 3 Qts Synthetic & 2 Qts reg oil or vice versa.

Hey Shank! that is excellent advice for the most part... especially about Penzoil! I won't even use that in an old lawnmower. I have run Mob1 15/50 for years but I put it on a bearing tester against other oils including all you mentioned plus red-line & royal purple >>> Schaeffer kicked their **** ! I don't sell it but I am using it now!
BUT -> I know everyone will have an opinion on this one.
BTW Royal Purple comes in 2nd but cost twice as much.

I dont race a mini stock but I am going to chime in here.I use Schaeffer in my shop and in my race car.If you have ever saw the list of top notch racers that use it you would give it a try.Scott Bloomquist just to name one.I use it in my personal vehicle too. just my 2 crusty pennies.

Currently running Schaeffer 15/40 in my 83 celica 22re.. ran it Nov 9th in a 15 lap feature and the water pump locked up in the 3rd lap! I kept the petal on the floor and finished 5th with the belt smoking and screaming. I thought it was the P.S. belt because the temp only went up to 220-225 (normally runs at 190-210)... I had to cut the belt off to get the car on the trailer after the race!!!
This is the first time that I have personally put oil to a test like this but I am totally sold on it now!!! I used to run Mobil 1 15/50 but I am sad to say I don't think I would still have a strong running motor after that!

I use Amzoil 20-50, have never had a problem using Amzoil in my mini-stock. In the 2001 season I lost oil pressure in turn 1,I drove 1 lap back into the pits, then onto the trailer, then I shut it down. Took the oil pan off at the shop and found that the oil pick up had come loose and fell off the pump!!Tore the rest of the motor down only to find that everything was alright, I ran the motor all of the 2002 season, and I plan to use it for the 2003 season. I also use Amzoil in my trans & rear end and I haven't had any problems with either.

If I use Schaeffer in my race car, how often should I change oil and oil filter? 6500 max rpm, 20 lap mains.

I am going to change mine out after 4th race since I just started running it... I understand that it will really clean out the engine! The engine (toyota 22re) that I am running now has 165K on it so I am sure that it needs to be cleaned a bit Then I will start changing every 6-10 races or as I think it needs it. The Rep that I am dealing with told me that I can go a lot longer... but I will stick to my plan for now and see how it goes.
