Do you guys run water pump alternators on dirt late models? is it a good idea?

yes, have been running the same unit for more than 3 seasons now with no problem.
i'm not a big fan of magneto ignitions, so we run an msd pro billet electronic distributor with an msd 6al. to avoid having to charge the battery before each race an alternator is required so the race-mate deal means you don't need a seperate component with yet another belt. to add to that you have to buy a "competition" type water pump regardless, ours came fitted to a stewart pump.
overall, we're very happy.

I've got the MSD PRO Billet with a 6ALN and 12volt battery as well with no alternator. We make sure the battery is charged up before we go to the track and have never had any problems. I know MSD requires a minimum of 10volts to properly operate the system. I'd be interested to know if a battery drains down to 10 volts after a night of racing. I've personally never checked mine.

I run the same as NJantz with no problems. At most we run 3 hot laps, 8 lap heats, 5 laps trophy dashes, and 25-30 lap features. This doesn't take into account cautions etc...
Use a good battery and put it on the trickle charge during the weak.
