Just have a general question for you late model guys. Round or square tube? What the pros and cons of each. I see for instance same year GRTs with each type of tubing. Just curious. thx sixwilliwn

I believe the round tubes flex more than the square tubes,

i think due to most of the sactioning body's rules, if the main rails are round tube, the chassis must be constructed from chrome moly tube. so with that in mind most square tube cars are mild steel or DOM tube.
i guess mild steel is far easier to work with (repairs) BUT i would think that chrome moly would offer some strentgh/rigidity advatages.
if your looking at buying a chassis from a manufacturer that offers both, why not ask them thier opinion and thier reasoning.

Hi Six, most builders will have a personal perferance, for some good, and sometimes not so good reasons......lol

but regaurdless his personal perferance, the racers themselves sometimes likes one over the other......and that is what the builder uses.......

If there was a clear winner or better choice........then no one would use the other......but they both have thier strong points.......

Square is stronger in beam strength, Round is stronger in compression........Square is easier to fit and weld......but round is probably stronger for the not-so experienced welder.....the weld wraps around the tube instead of sitting on top........

Round is usually easier to repair......it will spring back more than the square......once a square tube goes so far it kinks and will not come back.......of course, by the time it has been hit that hard, it's probably a moot point......

I prefer round....but to each his own......lol

Good Luck,
