On a normal pull behind open trailer, what sort of tongue weight should you have? I always move my car forward enough so that one person can't pick the tongue up. Is there a rule or ratio of overall trailer weight to tongue weight?

As a general rule you want 10% of your trailer weight on the tongue.

I think you need more if one guy just can't quite lift it.

Dirtbuster is right. I consider 400 pounds about right on the rig you described. This should be about 10%. Weigh the tongue like this if you don't have a better way: Use two bathroom scales about a foot apart. Place a board or something across them. Place the tongue jack on the board. The total of both scales is the tongue weight.

More tongue weight is better if your tow vehicle can stand it with pitching up too much. Check Circle Track this month and next. SLEEPY
