I have a couple problems with the three speed that I would like to fix myself-if that's possible. 1. The gear oil leaks out where the shifter levers bolt on, right where the little shafts come out-what is the problem?
2.The front shaft seems to have quite a bit of play (wiggle) in it. How can this be tightened up?

I have the same problem as number 1. Every week there's a puddle of oil about the size of a 50 cent piece on the floor. Not really bad enough to worry about it, but now would be a good time to fix it before it gets worse.

TWO WAYS TO FIX THE LEAKS GUYS.REPLACE THE SHIFTER SHAFTS,OR THE SIDE COVER.ONE OR THE OTHER IS WORE OUT AND THATS WHERE THE LEAK IS COMING FROM.AS FOR THE FRONT SHAFT WIGGLE,ID SAY THAT IS A FRONT BEARING AND THEY ARE FAIRLY EASY TO FIX.WHEN YOU PULL THE FRONT SHAFT OUT THOUGH BE SURE NOT TO LOOSE ALL THE NEEDLE BEARINGS OUT OF IT.GOOD LUCK!

you can remove the shifter cover and there are o-rings on the shafts replace them and reseal the leak will be fixxed.

the play on the shaft is from a worn bearing, remove the 4 bolts off the front cover, remove snap ring, and pull the bearing out. new bearing was less than 7.00 but i cant remeber the part #. they wont have any problem matching it up. very simple job nothing to worry about.
