I've heard of doing port work and then etching the meal with acid to hide the work. Does anyone have the time to give me some step by step instructions?
Thanks! Jojo

I've experimented with acid porting on a 2300. I ported the head like I wanted it, put a stock valve in it to seal it up and poured acid in the port (changing it every 24 hours). After the acid did it's job I took the head and had a bowl hog done (mainly to have a difference in contour between the port and bowl to mess with the techs eyes) and you couldn't tell from a factory cast head. Be careful though, that stuff gets on your skin, takes your breath, etc. I stopped doing it with the last fever. Wear a respirator and a full chemical suit.

I surely have NO idea of how to do it, but you can buy them from here www.castheads.com and they are SPENDY!!!

I can attest first hand, you will kick some serious a$$ with them heads. I watched a couple local cars with the 305 heads hand everyone their a$$ everytime they hit the track. Noone could touch them!

not as easy to detect as people might think either if done right. You have to have a good tech guy to spot them. Our tech guy did spot them after they had run the heads for a few YEARS....but he got fired now.

If you do it, and do it right, get used to saying "hey guys, heres your A$$!!!!"

They take cutters to the area right under the valve.

A factory head is machined there so thats why he did that as to make it look like it wasn't acid ported.

Porting the runners will take off the casting look. If you don't do a bowl hog the factory machine marks under the valve will have a casting look(dead giveaway)after the acid is done. REMEMBER to protect yourself from the fumes! Go to lowes and get some muriatic acid. Pour some in a plastic bowl and drop a piece of aluminum in it. The aluminum will disapear(depending on how big it is). Again..WEAR PROTECTION!

That is true about muriatic acid, but that acid only works on aluminum and not on cast iron. For cast iron, what is used is a combination of methods involving sulphuric acid and a salt brine solution. Sulphuric (battery acid, mainly) is VERY nasty stuff.

Still, however, a good tech man knows port dimensions or can use guaging methods (such as the ball test used by DIRT and others in the northeast) and that will always find heads that have been ported and "covered up".

Some companies (HVH, Pro Flow, etc) do cover-up porting on heads for large sums of money ($2k+). Others are more affordable.

Some racers don't seem to care how much it costs to cheat to win, I guess...
For the home shop, or for racers wishing to learn more about it, racingsecrets.com sells an online "book" about it. No great revelations in there, but it does help explain the way it's done.

Hope that helps,

KP

Muriatic acid works on cast iron maybe not as good as it does aluminum but that's what I used. As far as cheating goes...you're right it is. Some will do whatever it takes BUT sometimes there are circumstances that call for pushing the rules past the limit.

Battery acid works good on cast one thing that i have noticed is temp has a great affect on its ability to work. I will tell you this if you are gonna try this wear goggles and do it in an open ventalated area you can kill your self or damage your lungs and you better make sure there is no way any body or kids are snooping around the stuff. BE DAM CAREFULL.And if they don't say you can't then you can.

it's kinda funny the rules give you a max intake and exhaust port size yet there is no porting or polishing allowed!but you can port match your intake(rules don't say anything about the intake)why would they give you a max size,on the heads? It's a total grey area I guess. But don't port it!
