How good are Vortec heads? I see talk about them but haven' really paid much attention. What are their pros and cons? Good for big hp or not? Just curious....

If you're rules state you can use aftermarket heads and you're looking to produce 500+hp, I would NOT recommend the Vortecs (personal experience).

Why? Lot's of work (as compared to aftermarket heads) to get preped them for 2.02 valves. If you use a stud gridle, you either have to modify the girdle for secuing the valve cover or use an adapter plate ($120 or more $s and they still tend to leak).

The next motor I build (flat top forged, h-beam, light weight crank, aliminum single-plane high rise intake, etc) will probably have Darts on it. From what I understand they're dang near a bolt on and go.

Thanks all. I was just wondering how the Vortecs stood up against the older camel backs and heads from back in the day.

keep in mind youwill need a different intake as well.

Double humps work good but for the cost to rebuild them, all the machining, etc...

You can buy a set of bare dart iron eagles. And have twice the head.
