I run a steel block late model and have been pondering switching from an HEI to a Magneto distributer. any thoughts.

unless you want to do away with a battery & starter, i can't see much advantage. a good electronic ignition will out perform all but maybe the best magneto's (and even that would be doubtful) and far more reliable & user friendly.

I disagree, the magneto is very very reliable. the electroni type mags( aka MSD ) have taken that reliability and flung it out the window. The standard mag from hunt has been in service for decades and are near bulletproof. This is fact as mine were in use in the late 70's , early 80's then sat 20 years and are still being used by me the last 3 w/ no issues. thats reliable......

Go to 4m.net and the dirt late model tech, then do a search. A few weeks back they had a GREAT long post about them. By some guys really smart guys about mags.

How long has that mag been working on your lawn mower? Forever?

The systems not much different.

any sprintcar team at any level, carry a spare magneto and as soon as the engine doesn't run right, they change them.
pretty much all top nextel cup & touring dirt late model teams run electronic ignition.
the new magnetos are very good and very expensive. do they really produce more power than the equivilent electronic unit?
