why would a forged federal mogul set of pistons be 244, while a set of KB hypers are 249 out of the same catalog?

Forged pistons are better and cost more than hyper.

thats what i thought, but the forged are cheaper in this case, so i was wondering if federalmogul are junk or what?

Here is the end result of my hypereutectic experience. This was this motor's sixth lap, and the sixth lap of my entire racing career, lol. I think I'll be not only going to a different builder, but requesting a better piston next time...

i know the hypers are junk, had a motor that only made 5 races, but im wondering as to why the forged would be cheaper, and if anyone knows if they are any good

If assembled right and taken care of Hypers should last up to 2 years. I have ran 2 different sets and used and abused them. I can see from the picture that you used the cheapest Hyper they make.

Turned 7200 for 2 years with Federal Mogul hypers. Never had a problem. The picture looks like not enough ring gap put too much stress on the piston (or it got too hot). Fed. Mog forged pistons are stronger than hypers BUT they are heavy (probably why they are cheaper). When they start all the machining to get the weight down is when the money starts going up. I'm not one bit scared of a hyper piston. It's like anything else, throw it together and maybe it'll last. Take your time and pay attention to details and you have a little more confidence in it.

From the looks of that second piston you had a water problem before she came apart unless you were on alcohal. We've run 11to1 hypers at 7000 25 nights on a half mile 40 laps a night ,no problems.Often when you see a rod bent like that,it's from hydraulicing a cylinder, that puts the piston on a bind and it comes apart.I've seen it happen 3 different times 1 from a head gasket,1 from a cracked head and 1 from when a car sat overnight in the rain without the aircleaner properly covered.

The pictures might not show it really clearly, but it looks to me like it pulled a wristpin out the bottom and shattered it on the way back up. The water you see is from the gaping holes in the cylinder wall and some spilled out of the head upon disassembly. This is my first motor, and I didn't put the bottom end together. I purchased it from a 'reputable' local race shop. Secondly, the motor never got hot. Think I should have a talk with the builder?

What size cam and springs are you running. I had a factory stock 350 that blew because of a cheaper set of springs and retainers. It droped a valve into #2 and it looked just like that. I didn,t know thats what happened until my next motor was acting up and when I took it apart one of the exhaust valves was open. The retainer was ready to fail. I lucked out on that one.

looks just like the one I had destroy it self,I still have the piston sitting on the shelf as what not to buy.Mine the wrist pin pulled out of the piston I have both halfs. it destroyed the block ,cam, crank and 4 valves . It had 5 races on it and it let go with out no warning.

bandit, the heads and valves are okay, full of metal, but okay. I don't have any real sizable pieces left to see what happened for sure (not that I'm any expert). The biggest piece of piston #1 is the one stuck in the cylinder wall. The thing I'm trying to figure out is if it's my fault, the builder's fault, or the piston manufacturer's fault. At any rate, I guess this is my expensive introduction to racing.

I am currently running KB Silvo Lites in my alcohol mod motor, it is a low dollar first motor, but works great, 12.3 to 1 comp., 6500 to 6600 rpm as it is a stroker so I won't turn it to hard, not afraid of the pistons though. Details, details, details, put it together myself, ordered all the parts separately, good balance job. The next one will have light weight forged but it will also see 8000 rpm if necessary (shorter stroke).
But yes the reason the Federal Mogul's are cheaper is because they are heavy.
