Three weeks ago our engine picked up a miss with our $175. HEI distributor which has been in for a couple of years. I in installed a expensive DUI and it really did the trick for four nights without any problem. Now we have put in a new motor with everything new top to bottom and we can't get over 6000 rpm without it missing. I will say that when we took the cap off of the DUI after the last race, when it was running good, one nylon screw holding the rotor was broken and the other was loose and the rotor tip was bent over. Why it ran good I don't know. Put another cap which had screws already attached to it in and it misses now. The DUI did not have any end play but now it has .030 or so. One time last night it grabbed ahold without misses but most of the time. Am thinking about battery ground since this had happened with other dist. Voltage was 12.4 so knda rule this out. Battery is 2 years old but haven't put a load test on it. Am using cam button on new cam shaft etc. Going to readjust valves first this evening. Any ideas?

The only reason I can think of for your end play to increase .030 is that one of the shims above the dist. gear has been eaten up. Your distributor housing may need to be shimmed up where it meets the intake to relieve some pressure on the gear.

Are you running an alternator? If not, you may want to consider it.

Nowe do not run an alternator. your point is well taken there though. Have been checking voltage before and after the race and it usually is 12.4+ before and drops about 3 points. Don't know what end play is with it installed but when it is out that is where we have .030. Should we have any then? Thanks

I'm thinkin about .010-.020... You can by shim kits by Moroso from about any speed shop.

Doesn't miss now but we will find out tomorrow night. Did things one at a time, grounds, eliminated switches, changed modules 3 times, adjust valves, finally took our old hei cap and put on it it worked or didn't miss anyhow. We have a road along side us we can give her **** til dark. Truth will tell tomorrow night. Will keep you posted.

Truth was that the gravel road doesn't have enough grip to let you know if you are pulling or not. Went to the track tonight to get a good grip and it still cut out. Problem---SPARK PLUGS---GAPS---Plugs were old ones from the first of the year. Put them in when we were having problems 3 weeks or so ago. Used to change regularly but you know how it is. DUMB Dont't forget that a DUI you shuld run .050 and stock hei run .035 or so. Miscommunications between Dad and Driver.
