ok I'm buying a 1989 chevy pickup with a 305 and the bottom end has a knock. I already have a rebuilt 350 bottom end that is out of a 79 chevy van. My question is....can I just bolt the heads and intake off the 89 305 to the 79 350? which head gaskets do I ask for....the 89 305 or the 79 350? intakes i am sure i'd ask for the 89 305. what other changes do i have to make to use this bottom end being i'll be using all the fuel injection stuff? I'm selling my 81 chevy 3/4 ton tomorrow and i need to get this other truck together asap to haul the race car so any help will be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Heads will bolt on to the 350, but it will give you a big boost in compression .Intake manifolds will interchange 79 is probibly better.crank from the 350 will work in the 305 but the balance is off a bit and the same goes for putting a 305 in a 350 both weigh the same just have a different balance.The 305 should be 58cc or so compaired to64cc camel humps

The 79 crank is a two piece seal, the 89 is a one piece seal, you can't just swap them

yes i thoght the 89 305 was a completely different setup as it has the intake with the TBI and the centerbolts go straight down and not at a angle.....thats why ill be changine the head along with intakes. Also i do remember i cant use the flywheel off of the 305 ill have to use a older one. But still which head gaskets Should I use the ones for the 79 350 or the ones for 89 305? Will the 305 heads even work on the 350?

You want to use the 305 heads on the 350 and the standard 350 Felpro 1103 gasket. Both 305 and 350 will be the same. close enough anyway. You'll get near 11.0:1 compression. You may find yu have to play with the timing to prevent detonation and run high octane gas while pulling a trialer. You will make good torque though. I recommend the 350heads on the 350 intake without the injection. You throttle body injectors are to small for a 350 and the fuel mapping isn't ideal. Your 305 flexplate has a smaller bolt pattern with the 1 piece seal. You'll need a corrosponding flexplate for a 1 piece seal crank. The one piece seal crank is also external vs the two piece's internal balance. You'll need the big body striaght bolt pattern starter motor. everything else is a direct swap. does the 89 have a 700R4? If so, you need a adapter for the TV cable because of the geomtry differences with a carb setup. Otherwise your tranny won't las long.

thank you ...thats exactly the information i was looking for. but i want to keep the tbi...thats the main reason i am getting this truck. i do have the right flywheel for the 2 peice crank...and a starter so that wont be a problem.....thanks for the gasket #...that will help tons. ill get to work on this and let you know what happens. thanks again leapinlizard.

Well so much for all this...the truck got sold out from under me. Went with the cash last night, on our previously scheduled time, and the guy said sorry its gone. What really ticked me off was i already gave him have the money to hold it for me...and he wrote out a reciept too. He did give me my money back. He was the one to that sugested me giving him some money and he'll hold it......just typing this is putting evil pay back things in my mind lol. Oh well, thanks for all your help guys.....at least now I know what to do if I end up with the same kind of thing again.
