I am by no means an engine guy, but I have seen a low battery do that (I am told that even a stock HEI needs a constant 12 volts to work properly) I have seen guys run voltmeters just to be sure- The most bizarre thing I have ever saw was an engine that needed a ground strap to the frame, even with solid motor mounts. I have never had to use one, but I did see a car that always had a high end miss until it was grounded. check the fuel filter also- hope this helps.

Same thing happened to me 3 weeks ago. It was the base plate on the carb that had cracked at the passenger side rear bolt. Might check that.
