Hey guys! My Fiance has a 94 Topaz with the 2.3 in it. The balancer started making this rattling noise today (we parked it for now). It dont really look like a balancer cuz the belt also runs on it. My question is....have you guys heard of this thing going out like this? The guy at the service counter at the local ford dealer says it is "kinda" common. The stupid things are $300 just for the balancer and then they want another $350 for labor to put it in. Another question.....do you have to pull the engine or can you just drop it down a bit and what all has to be disconnected to just drop it down a bit? Does anyone know of a place on the web here that would have detailed instructions for doing this pain in the back side job? Thanks guys....I'd rather do this on my small block anyday lol. Stupid fords lol.

all you should have to do is lower the motor mount and maybe the right frame rail,I have replaced them before and have never pulled the motor, not sure on the price for the part 300 sounds high, but should not take more than an hour to replace.

I have not done one in a while but all I ever do is remove the mount and mount bracket by the timing cover and lower the motor, and just put a jack under the frame rail and loosen the bolts enough and the motor will drop down enough to remove the pulley.it isnt very hard to do.

its nothing to it just take belts off, take tire off, and there is a plastic cover behind the tire. remove that and you can get the bolt out dont even need a puller. about 45-hour and a half job depending on whos doing it.

Price sounds way high. The Ford part number is f6pz-6312-aa and list price is 153.57.

Thanks fordpartsman...maybe i'll call some of the local parts stores. That price was right from the ford dealership. Have you seen this as a common thing with them?

Yes it a common problem. We used to sell a lot of these but since there are not many Tempo/Topaz's on the road any more they have slowed down. The f6pz part is improved and we have never seen any repeat failures. I never liked those cars very much but the motor in them are tough as nails, with the exception of the balancer.

What does go wrong with them? ours wobbles and rattles....what causes this noise? Well I think these cars are $100 junkers but this one she bought from a lady (original owner) when it was 2 years old and she has own it ever since...it has just over 100000 miles on it and its still in prestine shape. our insurance company has valued it at just under $6000....so she wants to keep it. Its the 2 door topaz with the ground affects and rear spoiler so she "thinks" she has a sports car lol. Oh ya....whats the torque spec for that crank bolt too? Thanks.

Ya this car looks pretty much brand new....being lady driven since new we should get good resale out of it....lmao as long as she stays being stingy about me driving it. She keeps saying I cant drive her car that much cuz shes see's the way I drive my 3/4 ton truck....well the truck can handle it....I dont think the mighty topaz can so I wouldnt beat on it . I keep hoping someone will drive by one day and smoke it so we could just write it off, then I can go get her a chevy....something easier to work on. lol.
