When you place the distributor in, if you do not have the rotor lined properly, what will happen when you run the engine? Is the timing going to be a mile off? Or is there another problem?

The reason for the question is I pulled one distributor, and put another one in, and now the exhaust manifolds are running cherry red hot. Ignition timing is correct, so now I'm wondering if I screwed up when I put the distributor in.

It won't matter, as long as you have enough room to rotate your dist.and get your timing back where it should be. Put a light back on it and double check that timing, sounds like it may be retarded, or maybe the ring on your damper slipped.

are you sure that you didn't put the dist. in 180* off that might be or maybe a couple of plug wires are turned around

if it was 180 off it wouldn't run. More than likely you have the timing way retarded. If plug wires are mixed up it will backfire through the carb, just like being 180 off.
Get your light back on there and double check it.
