what is a good timing for a ford 396? also I am using a msd distributor, should i lock the advance?

it depends on the heads you're using. locking the distributor is a matter of preference.

i use the mechanical advance because it makes starting the engine easier, especially when it's hot.

Im using the world product roush 200 heads.
At what rpm do you want to be at full advance? Im running with a max rpm at 6500.

32 degrees with those heads. i bring the engine up to about 3000 rpms to set timing. this way i'm certain that all of the advance is in.

i like the advance to come is as quickly as possible. you only need the retard for easier starting.
