Having problems with an automatic tranny in a 1996 Dodge truck. When putting it in reverse, it pauses when you put it in, then slams in pretty hard. Once in a while you have to raise the rpms a bit to get it to go in. Once in, it seems to funtion properly. Is there something that should be checked or is tranny about done for. Any help will be much appreciated.

My 94 does the same thing so I just started letting it idle in nuetral for a few minutes then it doesnt seem to do it. Just something you might try. I know with the price of gas you dont want to idle alot but just an idea.

does it happen after it sits for a few days. How many miles are on it????Is 3rd gear working good.Does it downshift into first when you come to a stop. The 96 has electronic pressure and govenor control, the 94 uses mechanical pressure reg. and govenor. If its been doing it all the time then maybe a band adjustment would help.If its just started then I'd pull the pan and check for crrap in it .could be seals leaking. It should have a check valve in 1 of the cooler lines to stop converter drain back.
