I took the head to the machine shop to see if the head is cracked. I hope that is it.

If the head and head gasket checks out, you've got a hole in the cylinder wall. The block can be sleeved and re-bored. I hope it is something else, because we chased this for a while, and it's a pain to pull the motor completely apart. I bought new head gaskets and heads with no success. It's been sleeved for two months now with no problems.

If you have a small leak from a head stud or a head gasket the engine will burn the water while the engine is running. When you shut the engine down and as the water temperature rises and increases pressure, water can enter the cylinder. Has it ever been hard to crank, like wants to lock up due to the hydraulic effects of the water being in the cylinder?
The top of the piston will be clean if you have what I described.

when I took the head off the 1and 3 piston was cleaner than the rest but the number 1 was cleaner than the any. sometimes it is a little hard to crank.
